Call for Papers | Special Issue: Tafsīr Treatises

2026-06-29

Classical tafsir treatises constitute a significant part of the exegetical tradition and represent primary sources reflecting the rich scholarly heritage of Islamic intellectual history. Nevertheless, a considerable number of these works remain preserved only in manuscript form in libraries, while others, despite having been published, have yet to receive the scholarly attention they deserve. This situation highlights a significant gap in the critical study, preservation, and accessibility of the tafsir heritage.

To help address this need, Tafsiriyat is preparing a Special Issue on Tafsir Treatises. The issue welcomes original scholarly contributions focusing on tafsir treatises from both the classical and modern periods.

The following types of submissions will be considered:

  1. Critical Editions of Tafsir Treatises: Scholarly critical editions based on manuscript copies.
  2. Analytical Studies of Tafsir Treatises: Analytical studies examining published or unpublished tafsir treatises with respect to their methodology, sources, concepts, exegetical approach, intellectual context, and scholarly contributions.
  3. Translations of Tafsir Treatises: Academic, annotated translations of tafsir treatises written in Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, or other languages, prepared in accordance with accepted scholarly standards.

This special issue aims to preserve the manuscript heritage of tafsir, promote its publication according to rigorous academic standards, encourage analytical engagement with these texts from diverse perspectives, and make them more accessible to the international scholarly community. All submissions will undergo a double-blind peer-review process.

Tafsiriyat cordially invites scholars to contribute original research to this special issue and to participate in advancing the study and preservation of the classical tafsir tradition.
